Pet Skin Health
Just
like your own skin, your pet’s skin is an organ with a very
important job. It prevents dirt, bacteria, fungi, mites and
chemicals from invading your pet’s body. This is why it should
be protected and maintained.
What Does Skin Do?
There are three layers that make up skin. The top layer is the
Epidermis. It is made up of cells that die and are continuously
replaced. Dandruff is evident when the cells die too fast.
Shedding can also be skin related. Hair grows from follicles in
the skin. The follicles, like the skin cells, die and are
replaced. Shedding can occur from genetics, temperature, or the
amount of nutrition the pet receives for growth. Sebum is
produced from oil glands found on hair follicles. The sebum
protects the skin by waterproofing it and deterring bacteria and
fungus to prevent infections and maintain a shiny coat.
For the skin to function the best it can, it must receive the
proper nutrition. The health of your pet’s skin and coat
reflects his or her overall health. The nutrition from food is
sent to your pet’s skin and coat last, so it is important that
your pet not only gets the most out of his or her food, but also
receives adequate vitamins and minerals to maintain its healthy
skin and coat.
Requirements for Healthy Skin:
1. Fatty Acids: These must be in your pet’s diet because
your pet’s body can’t produce it on its own. Linoleic acid is
the essential fatty acid for dogs. Linoleic acid and arachadonic
acid are for cats.
Omega 3, 6,
9 is an advanced multi-fatty acid supplement for both dogs
and cats. Along with fatty acids, pets also need fiber and
digestive enzymes found in
Vetasyl
and Missing
Link.
2. Vitamins:
Vita-Tabs

nutrients your pet needs to lead a healthy and extended life.

3. Proteins: Although your pet may be given adequate
protein in his or her diet, your pet may not be digesting it
properly. Their skin and nails may become dry and smelly, and
there may also be a noticeable lack of energy. Enzymes aid in
the digestion of proteins. These enzymes can be found in
products such as
Viokase-V,
Pancrezyme,
or Prozyme.
